Jackie Shroff:Jackie Shroff has come a full circle. He started as a side kick to villain in a Dev Anand film (his style is certainly Dev Anand) and now he plays negative characters with aplomb.
But there was a time when he was a top hero who replaced Amitabh Bachchan in at least two films: Allah Rakha and King Uncle. Jackie Shroff's recent releases have been 'Eklavya' , 'Bhagam Bhag' and 'Apna Sapna Money Money'. His forthcoming films include Fool and Final, Maryada Purushottam, Durbar, Kurbani and Mastana.
From a one-room tenement in Mumbai's Teen Batti to a posh duplex in Bandra, Jackie Shroff has come a long way. Born and brought up in the ubiquitous streets in South Bombay, Jackie, began his career as a model. And with Subhash Ghai's film 'Hero', which became a blockbuster and ran for over a year in most parts of the country, Jackie shattered the myth that models cannot act. And for a man who was once labelled as a non-actor, he thundered onscreen with his powerful, award-winning performances in films like 'Parinda', 'Ram Lakhan', '1942- A Love Story' and 'Rangeela'. "Yes, I definitely feel I have come a long way," he says. "Yet, I feel a person should never feel content in life. Because then, you feel as if you have achieved everything. The motive to go beyond that simply dies down. But I still value the price of my being because things have never been offered to me on a silver platter. It has been a roller-coaster ride all the way, whether it was my relationships, my marriage, my family or my work. I have always had to struggle. Fight it out with fate. And fortunately, I've just about managed to scrape through and survive."
Strangely, Jackie's unforgettable roles of late are all as supporting actor. 'Gardish', which was a mediocre film at the box-office, was perhaps his last solo hit. Yet, the man's charisma has earned him a niche in the industry and established him as one of the top actors of our time.
Despite being a successful actor, there was a time when the dark alleys of his past seemed to call him back. Drugs and booze fuelled his system. However, the help of his wife Ayesha and the birth of his two children ultimately tamed the wildness in him. "The Jackie Shroff of today is a completely different person. I think it's the birth of my son Tiger that has brought about the change in me. My daughter Krishna is very innocent and she reacts strongly to everything. I want to be the best father in the world." That is why he is planning to shift to Madh Island, to reside in a faraway place where the air is not polluted and where his children can grow up in a relaxed atmosphere.
Jackie Shroff Entertainment Limited (JSEL), a company floated by the star, produced some films like 'Grahan' starring Jackie himself opposite Manisha Koirala and directed by his buddy K Shashilal Nair and `Boom` but they flopped.
Jackie Shroff is a minority shareholder in Sony India, a company that is valued at over $1 billion.
