Kajol Devgan

Kajol Devgan:

Indian audience has consistently rejected married heroines but Kajol has, even in her last release Fanna disproved it. After taking a sabbatical wanting to enjoy her motherhood, Kajol has been returning in `select films of select friends` (read: Karan Johar, Shahrukh Khan, Yash Chopra, Aditya Chopra) and in ad films. Interestingly, neither she nor Ajay Devgan did ad films earlier. It is believed to be an indirect influence of a practical and pragmatic Shahrukh Khan.
As an actress she is considered a class apart during the times when most of her contemporaries sleepwalk from one film to another. Besides the talent, there is an earthy innocence to Kajol.
The eldest daughter of Tanuja and Shomu Mukherjee has the enviable mix of Bengali and Maharashtrian in her and she is touted to be one of the leading ladies who will take the young men of India into the twenty-first century. Despite her disastrous debut, 'Bekhudi', there was no dearth of offers, as most producers had seen a streak of talent in her. "I just couldn't believe when 'Bekhudi' flopped. Nobody came up to me and said the film has bombed, because they knew I'd react strongly. But when Gautam Rajadhyaksha, who happened to be the script-writer of the film as well, said yes, I felt so worthless all of a sudden," she admits. But when the feeling sunk into her it wasn't that bad. And Kajol realised very early in her career that things didn't matter or make any difference, "Because the people who mattered to me had seen the film and they loved it."
Her first big break, 'Baazigar', with Shah Rukh Khan catapulted her to unprecedented heights and the industry pundits lost no time in predicting her to be the next Number One heroine. "Firstly I have never taken this position game seriously. I just don't believe in it. Govinda has consistently given hits, his career graph is great, his fan-following is stupendous, but he was never called the Number One hero. I think these positions are too fickle."
Her last major success, 'Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge' smashed all previous box-office records and deposited her right in the middle of a top-level battle. At the same time she has been accused of being a very difficult person to deal with. " I want to do something different all the time. I want to do something that I haven't done before. Roles should be specially written for me that would change the trend of the heroine's character. I want a role that appeals to me totally and inspires me. Unfortunately, this trait of mine is often misunderstood and I'm tagged as a difficult person."
Kajol is currently part of 'Main Tum aur Hum' a home production being directed by husband-actor Ajay Devgan.
