Ruby Bhatia

Ruby Bhatia:

Ruby Bhatia is best known as an ex VJ of Channel [V]. Ruby Bhatia started early in show business, as a child artist doing bit roles on Canadian channels such as Global TV, CHCH TV 11 and Channel 13 Kitchener.
In 1993, Ruby won the title of Miss India-Canada. She reached Mumbai soon therafter to further her ambitions in show business. Being born and brought up in Toronto, Canada, Ruby knew she was not cut out to be a Bollywood leading lady by far. Ruby Bhatia got a break with Star TV's Channel [V]. The television industry was just opening up then and Ruby Bhatia was at the right place at the right time. The next few years were a roller coaster ride. Ruby Bhatia became a household name in urban India, especially in the metros cities.
Not knowing Hindi well enough has been a disadvantage for Ruby Bhatia. She admits to learning Hindi only at age eight, while wondering why she needed to learn it, at all. She claims to be able to read, write and speak Hindi and considers it a major advantage.
Ruby Bhatia was more active in Bollywood as a child artist. She played the six year old daughter of Sharmila Tagore and Shashi Kapoor in a Hindi film entitled, 'Door Desh' (later re-released as "Gehri Chot") in 1980. She also played a boy in 'Do Yaaron Ki Yaari' which released in 1983.
Ruby Bhatia has also dabbled in theatre working with Makarand Deshpande and a few ad films. Ruby Bhatia was married to singer Nitin Bali. The marriage lasted a very short span of time. Talking about the relationship, Ruby Bhatia said,
"What could one do by sitting at home? We could only sit and talk. But how long can two people keep talking day in and day out? After one hour or so, their conversation is bound to turn into an argument and later into an ugly fight!"
Ruby Bhatia compered the Champions Trophy (cricket) in Colombo which was broadcast on Sony SET Max. Her downslide began in 2003 when Sony SET Max booted her out to bring in Mandira Bedi. While Mandira never looked back after that, it has been all the way down for Ruby since then. In an interview to 'The Telegraph' of Calcutta in March 2003, Ruby Bhatia was quoted as saying, "I don’t know anything about cricket. My brief from Sony was just to be my bubbly self. But people assumed I was there as a commentator. That’s why they did not accept me.”
Ruby Bhatia's ignorance about cricket was what supposedly helped Sony make up their mind to throw her out. In the same interview, Ruby says, "I asked Tony Greig what a wicket is. He said it was the three sticks. Then he said the wicket looked damp. I looked at the sticks and they didn’t look damp to me.”
After her stint with Channel [V], Ruby Bhatia played herself in 'Chori Chori Chupke Chupke', the movie embroiled in a scandal over its financing and Rajshree's 'Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon'. Over the last few years though, younger faces have come up. Currently Ruby Bhatia tutors youngsters on grooming and writes a column for a matchmaking website. Little else is known about the once high profile Ruby Bhatia who seems to have gone into near oblivion.
